July #SecChat – Targeted Attacks Set Sights on Vital Systems

Targeted attacks can take on many different forms and are flexible enough to adopt a variety of tactics. Think of them as a specialized unit for cyber criminals. They are utilized for very specific missions and operate with the precision of a surgical strike, rather than the carpet-bombing techniques used in other attack strategies. Whether targeted attacks are using a drive-by-download or a phishing scam, they’re all after the same thing – highly sensitive and private information. So, what makes targeted attacks different from other malware delivery methods, and what makes them so successful?

We will address this question during our July #SecChat, as well as identifying the ins-and-outs of targeted attacks, their tactics and variations, and what the security community is doing to stay protected. In addition, we will discuss the recent announcement of Google’s Project Zero initiative, malware obfuscation, and the resurgence of several bugs that were believed to be dead. Rick Holland, a principal analyst at Forrester Research, will be joining me for the #SecChat to provide expert insights on this complex and timely topic.

McAfee #SecChats are held in an open forum and we seek to foster conversation with participants on pressing issues facing the information security community. This is your chance to bring your own questions, concerns and experiences pertaining to targeted attacks and hear how the experts are addressing the problem.
